Customer Support # October energy bills: what changed for LPG-heated homes? 05/10/2026 Share [![linkedin](https://blog.flogas.co.uk/hubfs/linkedin.png)](https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url=) [![facebook](https://blog.flogas.co.uk/hubfs/facebook.png)](https://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=) [![twitter](https://blog.flogas.co.uk/hubfs/twitter.png)](https://twitter.com/share?url=) You may have heard that the energy price cap increased by 4% on 1 October. If your home is heated using LPG, this doesn’t mean your total energy costs, electricity bill or LPG price have all increased by 4%. The headline figure is based on a typical household paying for both mains gas and electricity. Here’s what has actually changed and what it means for an LPG-heated home. You may have heard that the energy price cap increased by 4% on 1 October. If your home is heated using LPG, this doesn’t mean your total energy costs, electricity bill or LPG price have all increased by 4%. The headline figure is based on a typical household paying for both mains gas and electricity. Here’s what has actually changed and what it means for an LPG-heated home. ## The changes at a glance | Energy type | What changed on 1 October 2026? | | --- | --- | | Electricity | The average unit rate for a standard variable tariff paid by Direct Debit increased slightly to 26.32p per kWh. The average standing charge fell to 54.83p a day. | | Mains gas | The average unit rate increased to 7.97p per kWh and the average standing charge increased to 29.68p a day. | | LPG | The Ofgem price cap doesn’t apply to LPG, so it doesn’t set or predict your LPG price. | | VAT | Qualifying domestic electricity in Great Britain is temporarily charged at 0% VAT. Domestic LPG and mains gas remain subject to 5% VAT. | These are average electricity and mains-gas rates across England, Scotland and Wales. Your rates may differ depending on where you live, how you pay and the type of tariff you have. ## What happened to the energy price cap? From 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem’s typical annual price-cap figure increased from £1,663 to £1,723. The price cap limits the unit rates and standing charges that electricity and mains-gas suppliers can charge customers on standard variable tariffs. It isn’t a limit on the total amount you can be billed. The more energy you use, the more you’ll pay. Customers on fixed electricity or mains-gas tariffs aren’t directly affected by the new capped rates until their fixed deal ends. ## What changed for electricity? For customers paying by Direct Debit on a standard variable tariff, Ofgem’s average electricity rates changed from: - **26.11p to 26.32p per kWh** - **57.19p to 54.83p for the daily standing charge** This means the electricity unit rate increased by less than 1%, while the average daily standing charge fell. Your actual electricity costs will depend on your usage, region, payment method and tariff. Check your latest electricity bill or online account for the rates that apply to you. ## Why has VAT been removed from electricity? From **1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027**, qualifying domestic electricity supplied in England, Scotland and Wales is temporarily charged at **0% VAT**, rather than 5%. This change has already been taken into account in Ofgem’s published electricity rates. Depending on when your meter is read and how your supplier bills you, the change may be divided across more than one electricity bill. The temporary VAT reduction applies to electricity only. It doesn’t apply to LPG, mains gas, heating oil or other domestic fuels, which remain subject to 5% VAT. ## What changed for mains gas? For customers paying by Direct Debit on a standard variable tariff, Ofgem’s average mains-gas rates increased from: - **7.33p to 7.97p per kWh** - **29.04p to 29.68p for the daily standing charge** This larger increase in mains-gas rates is one reason the typical dual-fuel price-cap figure rose by 4%. If you heat your home using LPG rather than mains gas, these mains-gas rates don’t apply to your LPG supply. ## Does the price cap apply to LPG? No. Ofgem’s energy price cap covers electricity and mains gas supplied under eligible domestic tariffs. It doesn’t regulate LPG prices. This means the October price-cap announcement: - Doesn’t introduce a 4% increase to LPG prices - Doesn’t set the price you pay for bulk LPG or gas bottles - Doesn’t forecast how LPG prices may change - Doesn’t change the terms of your Flogas agreement Your LPG price will depend on your individual agreement and the pricing arrangements that apply to your supply. You can check these in your contract, account information or latest Flogas statement. ## What if I live in a residential park home? It depends on how you buy your electricity. If an electricity supplier bills you directly, the normal domestic tariff and price-cap rules may apply. If you pay your park or site owner for electricity, the park may purchase energy through a business contract. Business energy contracts aren’t covered by the domestic price cap, so the £1,723 headline may not reflect the cost behind your bill. A park owner can’t profit from reselling electricity. You can ask to see how your charge was calculated, including the unit rate, standing charge and any VAT included in the underlying supply cost. ## What should I check now? If your home is heated using LPG: 1. **Check your electricity tariff.** Find out whether you’re on a fixed or standard variable tariff. 2. **Look at your actual electricity rates.** Your unit rate and standing charge are more useful than the £1,723 headline. 3. **Keep electricity and LPG prices separate.** A change to Ofgem’s price cap doesn’t automatically change your LPG price. 4. **Check your LPG agreement.** Your contract or account information will explain the pricing arrangements that apply to your supply. 5. **Contact us early if you need support.** If you’re worried about paying a Flogas bill, speak to us as soon as possible so we can discuss the support that may be available.   ## Find out more You can check the latest electricity and mains-gas rates on the [Ofgem website](https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/your-energy-supply/your-energy-bill/energy-price-cap-unit-rates-and-standing-charges).
