Winter-proof your home and LPG supply.

As winter approaches, LPG-fuelled homes face a unique set of challenges. Icy roads, heavy snow, strong winds, and flooding can all disrupt your gas supply when you need it most. But with the right preparation, you can lock in peace of mind for the winter months ahead.

Winter-proofing isn't just about reacting to weather warnings. It's about taking proactive steps now to protect your supply and ensure our delivery drivers can reach you safely throughout the colder months. Here's your practical checklist for staying warm and worry-free all winter long.

Keep access clear for deliveries

The most essential step is ensuring we can get to your tank when you need us. Clear any obstacles from access roads and driveways leading to your property. Keep the area around your tank free from debris, garden furniture, or equipment that could block our delivery drivers. If your route becomes unsafe or impassable due to weather conditions, let us know as soon as possible so we can reschedule your delivery.

Prepare for strong winds

When strong winds are forecast, take steps to protect your tank from flying debris. Remove any overhanging branches or trees that could fall onto your tank or bottles. Secure loose objects like trampolines, fence panels, and garden furniture that could be blown into your equipment.

Check your tank regularly for wind damage such as dents, scratches, or loose fittings. If your tank becomes dented, punctured, or starts to leak, call our emergency team immediately, as this poses a serious safety risk.

Stay safe during heavy rain and flooding

If you live in a flood-prone area, take precautions to protect your gas supply. Never cover the pressure relief valve or any vents on your tank or bottles, as this creates a safety hazard. Regularly check your tank and bottles for rust, corrosion, or cracks, and contact us immediately if you notice damage.

If your tank or bottles become submerged, do not attempt to use them or turn on any gas appliances. Water can enter the system and cause blockages, leaks, or explosions. Call us straight away and we'll send a technician to inspect and repair your equipment if required. Similarly, if your gas appliances are flooded, don't try to use them. Call a qualified gas engineer to ensure they're safe.

Plan ahead when snow is forecast

Snow can cause serious disruptions, so preparation is key. If you place your own orders, check your gas level regularly and order a refill when it reaches 40%. This buffer ensures you have enough gas if deliveries are delayed.

If snow falls around your home, and if you’re able to do so, safely clear it from access roads, driveways, and the area around your tank or bottles. For above-ground tanks, remove snow and ice from the top, sides, pipes, and valves to prevent damage from freezing or thawing. If you have an underground tank, mark its location with a flag or stake so our drivers can find it easily.

Important safety note: never use sharp or metal tools to remove snow or ice, as these could damage your equipment or cause leaks. Use a broom or soft brush instead. Don't pour hot water or salt on your tank, as this can cause corrosion or pressure build-up. Use a de-icing product suitable for metal surfaces.
