Flogas Britain supports first UK housing development with switch to 100% BioLPG blend

At Flogas, we know that energy is changing and believe meaningful progress comes from honesty, practicality and doing what’s right - not just what sounds good. As part of our journey toward a lower-carbon future, we’re excited to announce the Seaward Park metered estate in Exeter has become the first UK off-grid housing development to switch to a 100% BioLPG blend with Flogas Britain.

BioLPG has a carbon footprint up to 80% lower than conventional LPG[1] and is a certified byproduct of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) production and waste-derived feedstocks.

The estate’s new BioLPG package, which came into effect on 5 December 2025, will see 100% of its gas usage replaced with BioLPG across the wider supply network. Instead of requiring a separate fleet of vehicles to transport BioLPG – which in turn would add unnecessary carbon into the supply chain - as BioLPG and conventional LPG are chemically identical, the supply to the 25 homes at Seaward Park has been achieved through a process known as mass-balancing.

Importantly, the BioLPG used by Flogas is independently verified by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) system, so every drop of BioLPG will be tracked and consumed only once, and each of the residents can see how their own personal usage is contributing towards a huge step forward for the adoption of BioLPG in the off-grid home energy market.

Even better for the homeowners, as BioLPG is a ‘drop in’ product, no upgrades are required to the existing supply infrastructure at Seaward Park.

Ivan Trevor, Managing Director of Flogas Britain and Chair of Liquid Gas UK, said: “The UK’s first metered housing development to be powered by a 100% BioLPG blend with Flogas is a significant step towards a cleaner energy supply for the off-grid community.

“While electrification is the right choice for some customers, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. We strongly believe that BioLPG offers a practical and accessible route for off-grid homes to lower their carbon emissions without having to undertake extensive and potentially costly upgrades to their heating system.

“On behalf of Flogas Britain, I would like to thank the residents of Seaward Park for joining us on this journey. Not only are they supporting the production of real renewable fuel, but they are directly increasing the demand for bioLPG and helping push the whole industry closer to the day where 100% BioLPG will be a possibility.”

Andrew McCann, Head of Consumer Sales at Flogas Britain, added: “We want to be open with our customers about what BioLPG really means for off-grid homes. There is no need to make any changes to your heating system, and you won’t be seeing fleets of special ‘green’ tankers turning up at your door any time soon.

“Put simply, units of BioLPG are blended with regular LPG and both fuels will naturally travel together through the same supply chain. However, while the tanks and the pipes can’t separate the fuels, the mass-balancing reporting system can. Once the units of BioLPG have been allocated to you, they get independently audited to ensure nobody else can claim them.

“For the residents of Seaward Park, this means the fuel delivered to their homes will look the same but will have a lower carbon footprint. This is how an energy transition takes shape in the real world. It’s steady, accountable and verified progress towards a renewable future.”

With government currently considering the role of alternative clean heating solutions[2], the Seaward Park project is a practical demonstration of the viability of BioLPG and its benefits for consumers.

Flogas will be offering BioLPG to even more domestic and commercial customers from January 2026. To keep up to date on the latest news, please visit: www.flogas.co.uk/news.
